Description

The MPG player was using subprocess.Popen() with shell=True on non-Windows platforms, which creates a security vulnerability allowing command injection attacks if the external player command contains user-controlled data.

Root Cause

    shell = False
self.proc = subprocess.Popen(cmd, shell=shell)

When shell=True, the subprocess spawns a shell to execute the command, which:

Fix Applied

# SECURE CODE:
import shlex

# Parse command string into a list
cmd = shlex.split(cmd_str)

# Always use shell=False to prevent injection
self.proc = subprocess.Popen(cmd, shell=False)

Changes Made:

  1. Added shlex import for safe command parsing
  2. Convert command strings to lists using shlex.split()
  3. Removed platform-dependent shell=True usage
  4. Always use shell=False for all platforms
  5. Added security comments explaining the fix

Ruff Security Check

S603: subprocess call - check for execution of untrusted input

Note: S603 is a LOW severity warning about subprocess usage in general. With shell=False and proper argument parsing via shlex.split(), this is acceptable and follows security best practices.


Remaining Low Severity Issues (Acceptable)

The following LOW severity issues remain and are considered acceptable:

  1. S603 - subprocess call with untrusted input check
    • Status: Acceptable with shell=False
    • Mitigation: Using shlex.split() and shell=False
  2. S311 - Pseudo-random number generator usage
    • Status: Acceptable (non-cryptographic use)
    • Context: Random song selection feature

These LOW severity warnings do not pose security risks and are standard in Python applications.
